Hurdy-gurdy in the Noh theater | Tokyo, Japan

Dave Dogface Kawamura, Katsuhiko Makino, Masashi Kuno and Liu Suzuki.
We play hurdygurdys on Nou stage, which is Japanese historical and traditional acting stage. Last year, I played HG solo. But this time, we played with 4 Japanese HG players! The performace is the quite first time on Japanese history. On March in next year, we play again on this place. And at the time, we use my portatif organ on the stage with HGs.You feel some differance from our performance, but the time ,when Nou was established on Japan, is same time when it was on the mid of Renaissance in Europe.

This is a set of photos in the noh stage the other day.
I was only one last year, but this time it was a luxury of 4 Hurdy Gurdies.
It was a 20-minute performance, but it was very thick and received from customers.
There is a noh stage in March next year, but at this time I will take an organ pipe from home.
This is a noh stage.
We are very excited to collaborate with unprecedented history.
The Photo was Kenji Osugi.

Noh stage, Wikipedia
Noh ( )—derived from the Sino-Japanese word for "skill" or "talent"—is a major form of classical Japanese musical drama that has been performed since the 14th century. Developed by Kan'ami and his son Zeami, it is the oldest major theatre art that is still regularly performed today. Traditionally, a Noh program includes five Noh plays with comedic kyōgen plays in between; an abbreviated program of two Noh plays and one kyōgen piece has become common in Nohpresentations today. An okina (翁) play may be presented in the very beginning especially during New Years, holidays, and other special occasions.

together with Kyōgen is part of Nōgaku theatre.

Noh is often based on tales from traditional literature with a supernatural being transformed into human form as a hero narrating a story. Noh integrates masks, costumes and various props in a dance-based performance, requiring highly trained actors and musicians. Emotions are primarily conveyed by stylized conventional gestures while the iconic masks represent the roles such as ghosts, women, children, and the elderly. Written in ancient Japanese language, the text "vividly describes the ordinary people of the twelfth to sixteenth centuries". Having a strong emphasis on tradition rather than innovation, Noh is extremely codified and regulated by the iemoto system.

Hurdygurdy meeting in TOKYO! | むちゃ楽しかった!ハーディガーディ・ミーティング!

Hurdygurdy meeting in TOKYO!

more photos on Facebook –

It was a very precious day for Japanese hurdygurdy players!
Because it is difficult for us to gather on place with same instruments.
We talked about the unique instrument and some topics about it.
Each instruments had different characters each other.
And we played some medieval and renaissance tunes with 5 hurdygurdys. This was an exciting experience for all members.
One member brought his Hardingfele. And I also played my new fiddle with 12 sympathic strings. Mystrious resonace for 17 sympathic strings spreaded the autumn sky in Japan.
Around 4 pm, one player joined us.
He is the Japanese Nychleharpa player. He is a rare player, because there are quite few people who play the instrument. I have played the instrument for 20 years, but he has more career about it!
He and I played improvisation with the Nyclehaepas. We were enjoyed the sound made for duo playing. This style is quite difficult for me, because we live far places each other.
Adding him, we enjoyed talking about music and instruments more and more...
This meeting will take place on a few monthes later.

28 SEPTEMBER; Minato-ku, Tōkyō-to, JAPAN: KNIGHT WARS at Castle Tintagel with Homunculus

Dynamic!  Exciting!      The biggest armored battle event in Asia!

War Day will be a day of scenario combat based on historic battles. To fight throughout the day while an audience watches. Ideally, there should be other activities and entertainments for the audience, such as Renaissance dance and games!

via Katsuhiko Makino of HOMUNCULUS:
We play in medieval festival for armors on 28th Sept in Japan. Of course, I don't fight in armor!
