A Renaissance for an Instrument of Melancholy Magic - The New York Times



HAMBURG, Germany — At the end of Schubert’s great song cycle “Winterreise” stands the Leiermann, a tattered hurdy-gurdy player so repellent that even dogs only growl at him from a distance. And yet there is something about this old beggar, and the endlessly looping tune he cranks out, that fascinates the narrator of this bleak cycle — so much so that the narrator is ready to join him in what promises to be permanent exile, or perhaps death.

Schubert’s Leiermann came to life with startling immediacy at a recent performance of “Winterreise” by the vocalist Natasa Mirkovic at the Elbphilharmonie here. Ms. Mirkovic was accompanied not by a pianist, as usual, but by Matthias Loibner, one of a growing tribe of hurdy-gurdy masters who are ushering this thousand-year-old instrument into its latest reincarnation…

Hurdy Gurdy & Bagpipes Weekend – Halsway Manor, UK; 9-11 Feb 2018




Guaranteed to be one of Halsway’s noisiest weekends, this Hurdy-Gurdy takeover is a brilliant opportunity to get together with some of the best of Europe’s players in an intensive learning weekend of masterclasses, workshops,sessions and a Saturday night concert/dance. This course runs alongside the Bagpipes Weekend, in a frenzy of reeds, drones and buzzing things!
To the hurdy gurdy team we welcome Matthias Loibner from Austria, Cecile Delrue-Birot from France, along with the inimitable UK player Joel Turk. The weekend is hosted by Claire Dugué, hurdy-gurdy maker and repairer, and she’ll be available to help people get the most out of their instruments with tips  for maintenance.
For an extra £35, participants can stay until Monday morning, including supper and B&B. Please enquire when booking.

Hurdy Gurdy Weekend – Halsway Manor


BAGPIPES –

A jam-packed programme of diverse bagpipe playing styles, with some of Europe’s top players. This course runs alongside the Hurdy Gurdy Weekend, in a frenzy of reeds, drones and buzzing things!
We will be exploring traditional English and Border Music plus new and traditional music for European Dance. We will look at different and more unusual dance rhythms (for example 3/2, 9/8) and various playing styles, and explore how we can express emotion though our playing. We will learn variations and the techniques of how we can work them into our playing.  We will do most of the learning by ear but music scores will be provided during the course to support our learning. We’ll split the group into
beginners-intermediate, and intermediate and above, and you’ll spend time working with both tutors. And of course, we will have a bit of fun too!

Le propos s’articulera autour des instruments dits « pastoraux » du baroque musical français. Les musiciens et facteurs présenteront la vielle, le galoubet-tambourin et la musette sous leurs aspects organologiques (configuration, particularités, décoration, techniques de jeu). Ces instruments issus de la facture populaire ont-ils été « hissés » à un niveau supérieur ? Quel apport la période baroque a-t-elle fourni pour l’existence ultérieure de ces instruments ?

Le répertoire baroque français s’est fréquemment consacré à évoquer - à sa manière - la vie rustique et sa musique. Ce concert propose un répertoire très peu souvent entendu… voire des re-créations  mondiales ! Deux vielles, deux musettes, un galoubet de Provence et son tambourin, un violon et une grande cornemuse à miroirs feront entendre solos et duos mettant en valeur les ressources de ces instruments.

Choeur et orchestre du Département de Musique Ancienne

Musiques pour vielle, musette, tambourin, solistes, choeur et orchestre

Un programme d’une grande originalité est proposé ici. Un ensemble baroque d’inspiration française (cordes, flûtes, hautbois, continuo) s’associe aux instruments qui connurent une vogue considérable dans les années 1720-1760 : la musette (enseignée au Conservatoire), la vielle à roue sous sa forme baroque, et le tambourin de Provence, indéfectiblement associé au galoubet, petite flûte à une main. C’est un répertoire original, conçu pour ce type de formation, qui sera entendu : un Ballet de Village de J. Bodin de Boismortier, diverses pièces instrumentales et des extraits d’un petit opéra deFrançois Chauvon, Les Agréments Champêtres.
