Die Drehleier (Vielle, hurdy gurdy) gehört zur Gruppe der Streichinstrumente. Ihre Saiten werden durch ein Rad angestrichen, welches der Spieler mit der einen Hand an der Kurbel dreht, während er mit der anderen Hand die Melodiesaite mittels einer Tastatur abgreift. Das Rad ist am Rand mit Kolophonium bestrichen und funktioniert so als "endloser Bogen". Dies ermöglicht, nebst einer Melodiesaite gleichzeitig mehrere Bordun-Saiten erklingen zu lassen. Diese Saiten erzeugen anhaltende Töne und sind in Grundton und Quinte gestimmt. So entsteht ein Klang, der dem einer Sackpfeife sehr ähnlich ist. Durch rhythmisches Drehen der Kurbel kann ein Schnarren erzeugt werden; ein Schnarrsteg vibriert dabei lose auf die Resonanzdecke.
